Modern cars are safer and better equipped than ever, but all that technology can make them more expensive to repair. New figures from the Association of British Insurers show just how large the cost has become.
UK motor insurers paid a record £3.2 billion in claims during the second quarter of 2026. That was 5% higher than the previous quarter and 7% higher than the same period a year earlier.
Average claim costs are rising
The ABI says the average motor claim payout reached £4,900, up 4% quarter on quarter. Windscreen repair costs also increased, with the average reaching £283.
A windscreen is no longer always a simple piece of glass. Many newer vehicles use cameras mounted behind the screen for lane assistance, emergency braking or traffic-sign recognition. Replacing the screen can therefore involve recalibrating safety systems.
Why this matters when buying used
Insurance cost can vary dramatically between cars that look similar on paper. A model with expensive headlights, large alloy wheels, radar sensors and complex body panels may cost more to repair after even a relatively minor accident.
Before buying, get an insurance quote for the exact vehicle. Do not assume the premium will be similar to your current car just because the engine size or purchase price is comparable.
Look closely at previous repairs
If a used car has had bodywork, windscreen replacement or accident repair, check that the work has been completed properly. On vehicles with advanced driver-assistance systems, ask whether cameras and sensors were calibrated where required.
Warning lights, inconsistent parking sensors or lane-assistance errors can be signs that something needs attention.
Technology can still be worth having
Higher repair costs do not mean buyers should avoid safety technology. Automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warnings and driver-assistance features can provide real benefits.
The point is to understand the total ownership cost. Purchase price is only the starting point.
Five checks before you buy
- run an insurance quote using the exact registration where possible
- check tyre sizes and replacement cost
- inspect windscreens and lights for damage
- test cameras, sensors and driver-assistance functions
- review service and repair history
