Used-car demand is heading into autumn with plenty of momentum, and the quickest-selling vehicles are not necessarily the most exotic or expensive. The latest September market data suggests buyers are concentrating on practical cars that fit everyday life.
Autotrader reported that used cars were leaving retailer forecourts in an average of 29 days during September. Hatchbacks and compact SUVs dominated the fastest-selling rankings, with the MG HS taking the top spot at around 16 days.
Practicality is winning
The pattern is easy to understand. Buyers are balancing higher household costs, fuel prices and insurance with the need for dependable transport. A compact SUV or hatchback can offer enough space for family use without the running costs of a much larger vehicle.
The September rankings also showed strong representation from Chinese, Japanese and Korean manufacturers, which together accounted for 80% of the top ten fastest-selling models in Autotrader's analysis.
Electric cars are part of the trend
Three-to-five-year-old used electric cars were also moving quickly, taking around 25 days to sell on average. That was faster than the wider used-car market.
This matters because used EVs are increasingly competing directly with petrol and hybrid alternatives on purchase price. Buyers who can charge at home may see them as practical everyday cars rather than niche technology.
What buyers can learn from fast-selling data
A fast-selling model is not automatically the best car for everyone, but it tells you something about current demand. If you find a clean, correctly priced example of a popular model, waiting too long may mean losing it.
Before rushing, still check:
- service and MOT history
- tyres, brakes and bodywork
- insurance cost
- specification and trim
- market price for similar age and mileage
What sellers can learn
If your vehicle sits in one of the popular practical categories, make it easy for buyers to understand why it fits everyday use. Mention useful features such as boot space, parking sensors, smartphone connectivity, automatic transmission, low running costs or family-friendly specification where relevant.
Good pricing still matters. The fastest-selling cars tend to be vehicles where condition, specification and price line up with what buyers currently expect.
